JANET ROBIN
" Inspired and motivated by a variety of innovative and skillfull songwriters such as Chrissie Hynde, Elvis Costello, Lindsey Buckingham and Harry Nilsson, Janet Robin has been honing her own musical craft. Driven by memorable guitar work, Janet's songs place great emphasis on melodic arrangements with expressive vocals and lyrics. Her style has been described as "edgy electro-acoustic pop" (L.A. Weekly) with "gutsy original songs" (AXIS Music and Media) and her performances as "rockin, with excellent songs and guitar work" (L.A. Weekly Camel Page- Recommended Live Dates).
Following in the footsteps of one of her brothers, Janet's musical history in Los Angeles began when she started to play guitar at age six, luckily studying guitar with the late great Randy Rhodes, who taught locally in Janet's neighborhood. Whereas her brother eventually grew up to become a dentist, Janet continued on playing and writing with local neighborhood bands. Eventually joining the all-girl rock band, Precious Metal, Janet established a strong reputation as a guitarist/songwriter/background singer. After band struggles, style differences, and eventual break-up, Janet landed a spot in Fleetwood Mac member Lindsey Buckingham's band. She toured with Lindsey on two U.S. and Canadian tours and recorded with him in the studio. After working as a touring musician for a few years, Janet decided to break out on her own as a solo artist- writing, recording and touring . She has opened for Loudon Wainwright III, Buckethead, the Smithereens, and other national touring artists. In 1997 she traveled to Sydney, Australia to perform at The Pacific Circle Music Convention as one of two U.S. artists selected, and most recently was selected as a finalist in the 1998 Lilith Fair Talent Search in Los Angeles.
Due to past successful cassette sales at her shows, Janet decided to release a CD. Entitled "Open the Door," it features 13 original diverse songs described by Buzz Weekly as "Smart, savvy, fuzzy, hooky pop..." Co-produced with Mark Karan, "Open the Door" is released on Janet's own independent label Little Sister Records and is available by mail-order and through her website . "Open the Door" has also been receiving college radio airplay at several stations in the Northwest area, including KBGA (Missoula, Montana), where it has been added, made the stations top 30, and listed in the playlist section of CMJ. Janet also recently performed live on the air on KBGA's "Live in Missoula" radio show, and NPR station KUFM's "Acoustic Spotlight. Other radio adds include: KBOO, KUOI, & KAOS.
As a songwriter, Janet was signed to Bug Music Publishing who is administrating her publishing company. Two of her songs are currently featured on new artist Maia Sharp's release "Hardly Glamour," released on the Ark 21 label. Together Maia and Janet also co-wrote the songs "I Swore," "Steppingstone" and "Broken" on "Open the Door."
While continuously playing live in and out of town, Janet handles all of her own business with her label as well as booking, promotion and performances. Her vigorous touring has built her a loyal following by playing clubs, colleges, coffeehouses and festivals. Equally adept at performing shows both solo-acoustic or with her full band, Janet's energetic performances are always received by her audience with great enthusiasm.
